US Navy Reserve SpecWar

In Febuary of 1974, the US Navy decided to form a reserve Special Warfare unit to augment their active duty counterparts. The group consisted of only about a dozen volunteers. The Volunteers had been Vietnam and Korea Veterans who didn't want to stop training but for whatever reason had been taken off active duty. They were given the name Naval Reserve UDT 119. In 1974 the group held it's weekend meetings at the Naval Special Warfare Center in Coronado.

The Naval Special Warfare Reserve program supports each active SpecWar unit, except DevGru. However, unlike active duty units, the Reserves units are spread thoughout the United States:

The NRSW units can, and do, augment active duty teams frequently. In 1997, the NRSW teams contributed 17,000 days to active duty assingments. In the last three years the NRSW units have conributed over 49,000 days of support. The NRSW units were called up during Desert Storm and as well as other campaigns. Reserve pwersonnel can be found thruoghout the world being attached to active duty SEAL Teams.

The Reserve SEAL Program is only open to former AD SEALs. The Reserve SBU, MAY be open to civilians(the author is still checking on that). Weekend and 2 week annual training sessions are spent parachuting, scuba diving, shooting, and performing live-fire exercises, among other things. The Reserve SEAL units use the same equipment as AD SEALs.

As a side note in 1998 a Reserve SEAL was selected as NR Sailor of the year.
